In my series on heavy metals testing, this is video number 5. Another option in a heavy metal assessment is a fecal metal test. And while I do not usually use a stool test to check for heavy metals, some people do. But in some patients over the years, I have noticed a pattern in their metal excretion. So we will use a fecal test as a way to look at metal excretion over a period of time. But I do not usually use a fecal metal test as a way really monitor metal detox since fecal metals can be too easily impacted by environmental factors and exposures.
If you encounter something in the environment, even through food and water, that can contaminate the test. Your urine test could show up high for example if you ate something high in cadmium or aluminum, but that would not mean that the metal was absorbed by your body. There are a lot of variables to consider. In certain circumstances, I have used the fecal metal test as a screening tool to see if the child was having everyday exposure to something. I did have a patient several years ago where we found high levels of arsenic and lead. We did an analysis of their home to find that the area in which they lived used to be a big farming area. The herbicides and pesticides that are commonly used in farming result in high arsenic levels, and the lead in the area was also elevated. So with respects to that, the fecal metals test can be useful.
I would not recommend using the fecal metals test as a tool to assess whether a child has or does not have high metal levels, there are just too many variables. As an up front screening tool, I generally us the hair analysis, which is what I mentioned in video 1. And I spoke about porphyrin testing in video 2, which is a urine test. The two tests combined really do serve as a great screening tool for me. From there I can determine whether heavy metals are high or not. And if they are then we can look at other diagnostic options and also what heavy metal detoxification programs would work best.
