In part one of this two part series we talked about some of the ways our kids on the Autism spectrum make improvements and then regress when treating some of their often undiagnosed gut problems. As much as I would like to be able to do more, for many of the children I have to send them for an intestinal scope that is done by a gastroenterologist. What comes back usually is a very inflamed gut that is very characteristic of Autistic enterocolitis. I mainly refer patients out to a doctor in Texas by the name of Dr. Krigsman who is a pediatric gastroenterologist. He is my go-to guy in terms of assessing my patients and has been for years now. In my opinion, it can be very hard to find a doctor who understands all of the complexities involved in these cases and to evaluate a child from a GI perspective in the way that they need to be evaluated. And what I find from Dr. Krigsman’s evaluations are often times that these children suffer from inflamed guts, some quite severe, and yet from a pain perspective they are able to compensate so well.
So not every child is displaying severe pain or distress. We just see this cycle of improvement and then regression, it is a waxing and waning of gains and then decline, gains and then decline, repeated over and over. This is also very characteristic of Crohn’s disease where you also see this waxing and waning effect. If you think your child may have some of these same issues, you may want to do some more research on Crohn’s in children. The classic definition of Crohn’s disease very commonly fits the bowel patterns that we see in many children on the Autism spectrum. Because this issue is so frustrating, I wanted to cover it in this video. I know many parents who struggle with gut issues in their child for many, many months or even for years. I suggest that if that is going on in your child that you consider and evaluation from a specialist in pediatric gastroenterology who can understand all of the unique intricacies that present themselves in our children with Autism to determine what may be happening in your child’s gut.
